India's first seafood Park was inaugurated by Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Subodh Kant Sahai here today.
The park has been set up to upgrade the quality of seafood pre-processing facilities to international standards.
The park has come up through a private-public partnership with equity participation from 10 Kerala exporters, the state government, Ministry of Commerce, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and grant-in-Aid provided by the Ministry of Food Processing, sources said.
The park consists of 10 individual pre-processing units for each of the individul shareholders with common facilities like water treatment, effluent disposal, power, rainwater harvesting and rest room for workers.
This is the maiden effort of the Commerce Ministry in upgrading the pre-processing facilities of the industry according to European Union and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) standards of the United States.
The exporters have contributed 74 per cent of the share capital and 26 per cent has been contributed by the Kerala government and the Ministry of Commerce through the Marine Products Development Corporation (MIDCON), a company promoted by the ministry and the state government to implement the infrastructure projects for the seafood industry in the state.
