Red-fleshed fish soon for farming

ABC OlineAustralian News    30/11/2004 14:32:24

A Tasmanian seafood company says it will soon have another fish that can be commercially farmed.

Petuna Seafoods says the red-fleshed fish, saltwater charr, is popular in top US restaurants, and it's won a Federal grant to research and manage the species.

General manager Paul Lupo says there are some husbandry issues to be ironed out before the fish can be widely farmed.

"The research we've undertaken to date jointly with Inland Fisheries," he said, "really has been focused around the early development stages of the fish from egg through to a size where they can be put into public waterways for recreational fishing. This grant is going to allow us to take it a step further and we're going to be looking at issues such as correct stocking densities, what kind of feed formulation the fish should be fed, what kind of health issues we need to deal with."
